Civil Engineering is a study that began as the ancient civilization began and t is difficult to measure the scope and limitations of the study from the structure being built in the collective villages to the community-based industries of the modern times. Therefore, the field of civil engineering has developed along with the history of civil engineering by being classified as majors or rejoining together. Our Department of Civil Engineering is divided into the structural engineering field, the field of geotechnical and road engineering, environmental engineering, hydraulic engineering disciplines, environmental engineering, surveying, and GIS fields, etc.
Especially, along with the recent scientific advances, the department of civil engineering was able to develop through utilizing GIS activities which is based on communication development such as the introduction of advanced technology, high quality of construction materials, based on the optimal design of the facility, considering the harmony with nature, environmentally friendly, recyclable materials in accordance with the depletion of the satellite, etc. As a result of the effects of these technologies, the trends are being renewed day by day in each of the theories of civil engineering and applied technology.
Each field of this department of civil engineering has each characteristic but under a big proposition as a social infrastructure, mutual cooperation is fundamental. In other words, for a suitable space and for the overall lay out, measurement and GIS field are contributed. Additionally, it can be easily seen that in order to create community-based facilities, civil engineering is a study that is organically complemented such as Highway Transportation Engineering considering the geotechnical engineering around the facility for the design of structures for infrastructure, Structural Engineering to secure mechanical properties and stability of the new structures, Water Engineering, Environmental Engineering, which consider the structure and affinity with nature.
Therefore, in order to understand, develop, and apply civil engineering to reality, it is necessary to acquire the basic theory and practice in the field within the department of civil engineering and also it is necessary to have a complex view considering the relevance of cross-sector. Therefore it is necessary to have an education that can understand the whole division and understand the mutual relationship and not an education that is biased in certain areas.
For this, education in mathematics, physics, love of learning, computer languages, and others which are the foundation of this field must be preceded and basic education and relevant training of a broad field of civil engineering must be managed in the undergraduate program so a systematic training of a variety of specialties are ensured. Through this, we must be responsible so the students are able to enter graduate schools and in industries related to the major in various ways.
In the mean time, as the application field of the civil engineering is widening, due to academic exchanges between adjacent studies, expectations for the new field is growing such as n the Automation and Measurement Field and the GIS Field which are grafting the electronic engineering and the civil engineering, the field of Environmental Engineering and Construction Material Field which are grafting of applied biology and chemistry, the field of hydraulic engineering and geotechnical engineering which considered the existing symbiosis with the environment, and others.
Therefore, in case of the Department of Civil Engineering, since interactions with related subjects had difficult conditions and since the infrastructure is weak regarding this, there is no systematic connection between the studies but studies and research on its own fields are being pushed.
These researches include durability of structures, hydraulic engineering reflected in the ecological, environmentally friendly construction materials and geotechnical design field, considering the biological treatment system, environmental engineering, etc.
In the Department of Civil Engineering, we develop and apply the various trainings and try to conduct a broad understanding about civil engineering. Additionally, with the motto of technology development of civil engineering considering the experience and environment of the site conditions through experiments, we try to develop talented people in the civil engineering division. Through this, we hope to contribute to the development of the community, nation, and humanity.
